Delaware Lodge #1 The First Lodge of the First City of the First State.
The charter or warrant of Delaware Lodge No. 1, I.O.O.F. under which we were organized and under which we are still working, was granted May 27, 1830. This charter was granted unto Brothers George R. McFarlan, James McNeale, Thomas Hill, Simon Robinson, John Scott, Joseph Smith, James Platt, Nelson Ball, L. Manchester and their successors. The charter was signed by Thomas Wildey, under the Seal of the Grand Lodge of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows of the United States.
Owing to the absence of the Sire, the first officers were not installed until September 18, 1830, at which time, assisted by Past Grand C.F. Echey of Maryland, the Grand Sire duly inducted the first officers of this lodge into their respective offices. These officers were: James McNeale, Noble Grand, John Scott, Vice Grand and George R. McFarlan, Secretary.
At the first meeting, held at No. 40 High Street, now Fourth Street, Wilmington, there were eight members initiated into the "mysteries" of Odd Fellowship. In March 1832, the Lodge moved its meeting place to a building known as the "Old Academy", situated on Market Street between Eighth and Ninth Streets. Owing to the limited accommodations here the lodge, in May 1833, procured a room in the building then known as No. 81 Market Street, now about No. 309 Market St.
The Lodge continued to meet here until April 1843, barring a few years during which it was dormant, and in this latter year, in conjunction all the then existing lodges of the Order in the City, it secured a room in what was known as the "Temperance Hotel", located on Fourth Street between Market and King.
In the meantime, the Order had erected a building at the corner of Third and King Streets and in this building, our first meeting was held on Monday evening, May 21, 1849. Delaware Lodge continued to function from this location until 1934, at which time the Odd Fellows Building at Tenth and King Streets was completed and occupied.
September, 1965 the Odd Fellows building at 3301 N. Market Street was dedicated and Delaware Lodge moved into the new facilities. In 1996, the Odd Fellows Building at 3301 N. Market Street was sold, and Delaware Lodge merged with Star of Bethel and moved into these facilities at Star of Bethel Hall, 2201 Grubb Road, Wilmington, in October 1996.
