A.N.T.I.C.
A Cause for those who Care
Wilmington, Delaware

Nurses devote their lives to caring for others; however, what happens when a nurse is in dire need ? At St. Francis Hospital, his or her co-workers rally together to help in the form of A.N.T.I.C.

Founded in 1990, A.N.T.I.C. is the Association of Nurses Together In Caring. This non-profit organization, composed of nurses from the St. Francis Hospital staff, are dedicated to raising money to help a nurse or a nurse's family member who is experiencing catastrophic financial problems due to a medical condition. The group organizes a yearly benefit dinner dance and sells T-shirts to raise the much needed funds.

Each year a letter is sent to nurse managers throughout the hospital asking them to recommend possible candidates who might qualify as that year’s A.N.T.I.C. recipient. The A.N.T.I.C. Board Members then meet and vote to make their decision. In 1990, a member of the Intermediate Care Unit, Janice Rhoades, R.N., became the organization’s first recipient. Janice Rhoades was battling cancer and had to undergo an expensive bone marrow transplant. The monies raised from the A.N.T.I.C. benefit enabled her to have that operation. Janice has since died, but others continue to benefit from this committee’s work.

In 1991, Pat Grant, R.N. an obstetric nurse at St. Francis Hospital learned that her son Justin, who was stricken with leukemia, also needed a bone marrow transplant. A.N.T.I.C. came to the rescue and raised $7,000 toward Justin’s medical costs. To date Justin is doing well.

In 1992, the A.N.T.I.C. Board chose two recipients: Helen McDougal, R.N. a nurse on Seventh Clayton and Barbara Huntsman, R.N. from the Obstetrical Department. Helen McDougal is disabled due to multiple sclerosis. Barb Huntsman’s twenty-one year old son, Jeffrey was in a severe automobile accident in August and as a result, endured a long stay at the Shock Trauma Unit at the University of Maryland Hospital. Jeffrey Huntsman is currently undergoing long-term speech therapy and physical rehabilitation. In 1992, A.N.T.I.C. raised $8,000 to help their co-workers.

A.N.T.I.C. President Maureen Jewell, R.N. said, "This organization was formed in the caring spirit and values that St. Francis Hospital hold dear. We are an active group, we don’t just discuss a problem, we do something about it !"
"The number of people who have supported this groups efforts over the years is wonderful. They come together in the spirit of caring to help one another." For more information about A.N.T.I.C. or to make a donation; contact Maureen Jewell at (302) 421-4478.
